Every September 15th, the founding of the 1st Patricios Infantry Regiment is commemorated. It is one of the oldest and most iconic units of the Argentine Army and has played a role in some of the most significant events in the nation’s history.

Founded in 1806 at the behest of Santiago de Liniers, the Patricios Regiment was formed in response to the First British Invasion. Citizens of Buenos Aires organized to defend the city and formed the Legion of Urban Patricios Volunteers, under the leadership of Cornelio Saavedra. Thus emerged a military force that would, over time, become one of the historic units of the Argentine Army and quickly assume a prominent role in the political and military life of the Viceroyalty.

On July 5th, 1807, the Patricios faced their first battle during the defense of Buenos Aires against the Second British Invasion, led by General Whitelocke. Their performance on that day contributed to the victory over British troops and cemented the unit’s status as a symbol of courage and commitment to sovereignty.

In 1810, the regiment played a decisive role in the events of the May Revolution, contributing—under Saavedra’s leadership—to the establishment of the First National Government.

Throughout their history, the Patricios have been present at various pivotal events in the nation’s history. They participated in the campaigns for independence in Upper Peru and the Banda Oriental, in the creation and defense of the national flag in 1812, in the War against the Brazilian Empire, and in the Desert campaigns, leaving a legacy of courage and sacrifice.

In more recent times, their participation in the 1982 Malvinas War and the events at La Tablada in 1989, during the retaking of the barracks, reaffirmed their role in defending sovereignty and the constitutional order.

Currently, the primary mission of the 1st Patricios Infantry Regiment is to provide an escort for the Chief of the Army General Staff. Its operational missions also include securing its own barracks, the Army General Staff, and the Ministry of Defense, as well as participating in the retaking of military installations in urban areas. Furthermore, the unit has the exclusive responsibility of providing the honor guard at the historic Cabildo of Buenos Aires.

220 years after its creation, the 1st Patricios Infantry Regiment continues to be a symbol of Argentine military tradition and keeps alive the legacy of those who, with honor, dedication, and courage, were part of this historic unit and contributed to our nation’s path toward freedom and independence.
