Every August 17th, Argentina commemorates the passing of General Don José de San Martín, Father of the Nation and a pivotal figure in South American emancipation. On the 176th anniversary of his death, which occurred in 1850 in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, we remember his life, his work, and the legacy of freedom he left to Argentina and the continent.

The commemoration of this date not only honors his death but also celebrates his significance, his legacy, and his lasting impact on the region. His figure has been immortalized in the collective memory of Argentina and the continent, not only for his military achievements but also for the values he embodied: freedom, justice, and unity.

Born in Yapeyú in 1778, San Martín began his military career in Spain and returned to Buenos Aires in 1812 to join the cause of independence. That same year, he created the Regiment of Mounted Grenadiers, and in 1813, he won his first victory on American soil at the Battle of San Lorenzo.

His strategic vision transcended national borders. In 1817, he led the Crossing of the Andes, one of the greatest military feats in history, which paved the way for Chile’s liberation. The victories at Chacabuco and Maipú consolidated that process, and San Martín later led the expedition that contributed to Peru’s independence in 1821.

San Martín’s legacy extends beyond his military exploits. His vision of a free and united Latin America remains an ideal for many nations. He promoted the idea that freedom was not only an inalienable right but also a collective duty. He fostered values such as discipline, sacrifice, humility, and selflessness.

After retiring from political and military life, he chose exile in Europe and kept his distance from the internal disputes of the newly independent nations. He died on August 17th, 1850, and his remains rest in the General San Martín Mausoleum, located in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Buenos Aires, where they are guarded by the Mounted Grenadiers.

176 years after his death, the nation honors the memory of General José de San Martín, whose vision and commitment to independence transcended his time and made him one of the great figures in Argentine and American history.
