Every July 2, Argentina commemorates the victims of the attack carried out against the cafeteria of the Federal Security Superintendency of the Argentine Federal Police, one of the most serious terrorist attacks in our country’s history. On the 50th anniversary of that tragic event, we pay tribute to those who lost their lives and stand with their families in their remembrance.
On July 2, 1976, at 1:20 p.m., an explosive device planted by the Montoneros organization detonated in the cafeteria of the agency’s headquarters located at 1417 Moreno Street in the City of Buenos Aires, while dozens of people were having lunch. The explosion caused the building to collapse, killing 23 people and injuring dozens more.
Among the victims were members of the Argentine Federal Police as well as civilians working in the building. The attack left a deep mark of grief on their families and stands as one of the most tragic episodes of the political violence that Argentina endured during the 1970s.
Half a century after that attack, the national government reaffirms the importance of preserving the memory of all victims of terrorism and of promoting awareness of these events as part of a comprehensive view of our history.
Remembering those who lost their lives also means renewing our commitment to peace, democratic coexistence, and the rejection of all forms of political violence.
