Today, June 2nd, Argentina celebrates National Dog Day, a day that pays tribute to the loyalty, companionship, and courage these animals provide to people in many aspects of daily life.

The commemoration was established in 1996 in honor of Chonino, a German Shepherd from the Argentine Federal Police who lost his life in the line of duty on June 2nd, 1983. During a police operation, the dog defended his handler and, even while seriously injured, managed to preserve evidence that helped identify those responsible for the crime.

Chonino had joined the Argentine Federal Police in 1977 and was specially trained for security and protection duties. His story became a symbol of loyalty, courage, and dedication to service—values that represent the bond dogs have built with people over time.

In addition to being inseparable companions in millions of homes, dogs perform essential roles in assistance, rescue, search and rescue, therapy, security, and working alongside various law enforcement agencies and institutions. Their ability to learn, their intelligence, and their close relationship with humans make them indispensable allies in numerous activities.

On this National Dog Day, we recognize the contribution these animals make to our society every day and remember Chonino, whose story remains an example of loyalty and devotion.
