Every May 31st, Argentina commemorates National Atomic Energy Day, a date that marks the creation of the National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA) in 1950, the agency that launched Argentina’s nuclear development for peaceful and scientific purposes.
The institution was established by Decree No. 10936/50, with the aim of coordinating and promoting atomic research, supervising nuclear activities throughout the national territory, and establishing protective measures against the effects of radioactivity.
The development of Argentina’s nuclear sector began with the training of professionals specialized in related sciences and technologies. Over the years, strategic areas such as radiochemistry, nuclear metallurgy, and uranium mining were promoted, consolidating a scientific structure of international significance.
Currently, the CNEA is carrying out important strategic projects that position Argentina as a regional leader in nuclear matters. Among these, the RA-10 multipurpose reactor stands out, designed to strengthen radioisotope production and scientific research, as well as the Argentine Center for Proton Therapy, which will be the first in Latin America to use protons for cancer treatment.
On National Atomic Energy Day, we extend our greetings to all personnel in Argentina’s nuclear sector, whose hard work makes nuclear activities possible and ensures that Argentina remains a global leader in this field.
