National Cockade Day

Every May 18th, Argentina celebrates National Cockade Day, honoring one of the oldest and most iconic national symbols of our identity. With its light blue and white colors, this emblem symbolizes the struggle for freedom, the unity of the people, and love for the homeland.

The history of the cockade dates back to 1812, in the midst of the independence movement. In that context, General Manuel Belgrano, then commander of the Patricios Regiment, proposed the creation of a distinctive emblem to identify the revolutionary troops and distinguish them from the royalist forces. Thus was born the blue-and-white cockade, which was officially recognized on February 18th, 1812, by the First Triumvirate.

Escarapela Day was established in 1935 by the National Council of Education and, years later, in 1951, incorporated into the Argentine school calendar with the aim of fostering knowledge and appreciation of national symbols in the classroom.

On Rosette Day, we remember its importance as a symbol of our nation, proudly wear our national colors, and celebrate the legacy of those who fought for our freedom.
