Every May 8, the Feast of Our Lady of Luján is celebrated. She is the patron saint of Argentina, a central figure in the country’s religious tradition, and a symbol of faith for millions of people.

Devotion to Our Lady of Luján dates back to 1630, when an image of the Immaculate Conception of Mary arrived from Brazil, bound for the northern part of the country. During its journey, upon reaching the banks of the Luján River, the cart carrying it inexplicably stopped and could only continue on its way once the image was removed. This episode was interpreted as a sign, giving rise to one of the most profound expressions of faith in Argentine history.

Over time, the figure of the Virgin of Luján became a spiritual reference point for broad sectors of society. In 1930, Pope Pius XI officially declared her the patron saint of the Argentine Republic, coinciding with the tercentenary of the event that marked the beginning of her veneration.

The Basilica of Luján, located in the province of Buenos Aires, has become one of the main pilgrimage sites in the country and in Latin America. Every year, thousands of faithful flock there to express their devotion, give thanks, and renew their hopes.

On this date, Argentina recognizes the historical and cultural significance of Our Lady of Luján, whose presence spans generations and continues to be a symbol of faith and unity for the Argentine people.
