Today, 7 May, Argentina celebrates National Mining Day, in tribute to the first ‘Mining Promotion Act’ passed in 1813 by the General Constituent Assembly, an initiative that marked the beginning of the regulatory development of this sector in the country.
This legislation represented a turning point by promoting the exploration and exploitation of mineral resources, broadening the productive horizon beyond the primary economy that had prevailed until then. Over time, mining established itself as a strategic sector for national economic development.
In 1886, the enactment of the Mining Code, through Law No. 1919, established the legal framework regulating the rights, obligations and procedures related to the activity, laying the foundations for its organisation and operation. Subsequently, Decree No. 33,338 of 1945 officially designated 7 May as National Mining Day.
These policies aim to strengthen a sector with significant productive potential, supporting initiatives linked to strategic minerals such as gold and copper, which offer new opportunities for investment and development across different regions of the country.
On this day, Argentina recognises the historical and current importance of mining as a key activity for economic development and reaffirms its commitment to the sector’s growth.
