May 2nd: Argentina Pays Tribute to the Crew of the A.R.A. General Belgrano

May 2nd, 1982, went down in Argentine history as the day the cruiser A.R.A. General Belgrano was sunk during the South Atlantic conflict. On that day, 323 crew members lost their lives, making it the greatest naval tragedy in the country’s history.

The ship, which was operating in the waters of the South Atlantic, was attacked by the British submarine HMS Conqueror, causing irreversible damage and its subsequent sinking.

In commemoration of the fallen, the national government established this date as National Day of the Cruiser A.R.A. General Belgrano through Decree Number 745/98, with the purpose of keeping alive the memory of the sailors who gave their lives for the Fatherland.

On this day, we pay tribute to the 323 sailors of the A.R.A. General Belgrano.
