Every April 29th, Argentina celebrates Animal Day, a day dedicated to promoting reflection on the care, protection, and respect for all animals. The date commemorates the death, in 1926, of Ignacio Lucas Albarracín, a key figure in the consolidation of the animal protection movement in our country.
Albarracín, a lawyer from Córdoba, served as Secretary of the Argentine Society for the Protection of Animals and was one of the main proponents of Law No. 2,786, enacted in 1891. This legislation marked a milestone by establishing penalties for acts of abuse and cruelty toward animals, laying the legal groundwork for their protection.
Today, Argentina’s regulatory framework is based on Law No. 14,346, in effect since 1954, which criminalizes acts of abuse and cruelty, reaffirming the State’s commitment to protecting animals and promoting a more respectful coexistence.
Animals occupy a central place in daily life: they provide companionship, form emotional bonds, and contribute to people’s emotional well-being. In this context, Animal Day invites us not only to celebrate that bond but also to renew our collective responsibility for their care.
