National Sovereignty Day

Every November 20, our country commemorates National Sovereignty Day, a date that invites us to reflect on the pillars of our nation, the defense of independence, and control over our resources. This commemoration has its roots in the Battle of Vuelta de Obligado.

In 1845, an Anglo-French fleet attempted to impose its military and commercial power by invading the Paraná River with the aim of opening markets and strengthening its influence in the region. However, at a narrow bend in the river, in the Buenos Aires district of San Pedro, the forces of the Argentine Confederation deployed a bold and decisive strategy to prevent their advance.

Thick chains stretched from shore to shore blocked the passage of the invading ships, while batteries of cannons positioned in the ravines provided cover for the national troops. Despite facing a fleet superior in number and equipment, the Argentine combatants held out for more than seven hours, preventing the foreign powers from occupying the coast and reaffirming control of the territory.

Although the enemy military force was larger, it failed to achieve its objectives. The strength of the national defense ultimately forced the signing of a peace treaty that recognized Argentina's right to its inland rivers. In this way, Vuelta de Obligado transcended the battlefield to become an enduring symbol of unity, courage, and self-determination.

The importance of this battle was officially recognized in 1974, when November 20 was established as National Sovereignty Day. This commemoration serves as a reminder that sovereignty is not limited to the protection of territory: it also implies the safeguarding of the nation's political, economic, and cultural independence.

Today, the Battle of Vuelta de Obligado not only represents the memory of those who gave their lives for their country, but also reminds us of the vital importance of actively defending our territory, our resources, and our freedom as a sovereign people. It is a reminder that defending our homeland is an ongoing task that requires the commitment of all Argentines.

On this National Sovereignty Day, we honor our heroes and reaffirm our commitment to a free, independent, and sovereign Argentina.
