Every November 6, Argentina celebrates National Parks Day in commemoration of Francisco Pascasio Moreno's 1903 donation of some 7,500 hectares of his property in the Nahuel Huapi Lake area, in what is now the province of Río Negro, with the aim of having it “preserved as a public natural park.”

Years later, that donation gave rise to the first national park in the country and in South America: Parque Nacional del Sud, officially created in 1922 and converted into Nahuel Huapi National Park in 1934.

Since then, national parks have become one of the most important policies in terms of environmental preservation, scientific research, and protection of the nation's natural and cultural heritage.

Currently, the national system has more than fifty protected areas distributed throughout the territory, covering unique ecosystems: from the Misiones jungle and Patagonian forests to the Pampas grasslands and Puna deserts.

On this new anniversary, the National Government pays tribute to those who, throughout history, have promoted the protection of our natural heritage, and recognizes the work of park rangers, scientists, and workers who daily care for these lands that are the pride of all Argentines.
