Today marks another anniversary of the creation of the 1st Patricios Infantry Regiment, one of the oldest and most representative units of the Argentine Army. Founded in 1806 at the behest of then-Captain Santiago de Liniers in response to the First British Invasion, the Patricios Regiment has played a leading role in and witnessed the most decisive moments in our history.

Its origins date back to a key event: the defense of Buenos Aires by armed citizens who, under the leadership of Cornelio Saavedra, organized themselves as the Legion of Urban Volunteer Patricios. Thus was born a military force that preceded even national independence itself and quickly gained prominence in the political and military development of the Viceroyalty.

Their baptism of fire came on July 5th, 1807, when the Patricios, in a memorable feat, helped repel the second British invasion led by General Whitelocke. Their actions on that day cemented their status as a symbol of courage and commitment to sovereignty.

From then on, the Patricios Regiment was present in all the major episodes of Argentine history. It actively participated in the May Revolution of 1810 and was a key player in the formation of the First National Government. Throughout the campaigns for independence in Upper Peru and the Eastern Band, the creation of the National Flag in 1812, the War against the Brazilian Empire, and the Desert Campaigns, its name became linked to events that shaped the course of the nation.

In more recent times, their presence was also decisive during the Falklands War in 1982 and the events of La Tablada in 1989, reaffirming their mission as guardians of sovereignty, constitutional order, and the defense of the Republic.

Currently, the main mission of the 1st Patricios Infantry Regiment is to escort the Chief of the General Staff of the Army, as well as to provide security for the General Staff, the Ministry of Defense, and various military installations. In addition, it has sole responsibility for performing the honor guard at the historic Cabildo of Buenos Aires.

The Regiment continues to be a benchmark of Argentine military tradition, guarding not only the present but also the memory of those who honorably gave their lives for freedom. Today, 219 years after its founding, we salute with respect and admiration all the members of the Patricios Regiment, past and present, and pay tribute to their tireless work in defense of the homeland. May their example inspire us to value our roots and continue building a free and sovereign country.
