Today is the 182nd anniversary of the birth of Julio Argentino Roca, a central figure in the consolidation of the national State and key protagonist of a foundational stage of our history. Born on July 17, 1843 in San Miguel de Tucumán, Roca was a military man, politician and statesman whose actions have had a lasting impact on the institutional, territorial and economic construction of Argentina.

From a young age, Roca showed a strong vocation for public service and the defense of the country. He participated in the civil wars and in the War of the Triple Alliance, and at the age of 31 he reached the rank of general. His leadership in the Desert Campaign was decisive in consolidating the national territory and affirming Argentine sovereignty over Patagonia.

He occupied the presidency of the Nation in two periods (1880-1886 and 1898-1904). During his first term, he promoted structural reforms: the federalization of Buenos Aires, monetary unification, the expansion of the railroad, the creation of provinces and national territories, and an educational policy that consolidated the system of public, secular and free education. These transformations laid the foundations for economic growth, territorial integration and Argentina's entry into the global trade scenario.

During his second term, Roca faced new institutional and social challenges, promoting the modernization of the State. He promoted the Law of Compulsory Conscription, strengthened the Armed Forces and prioritized diplomacy as an instrument of conflict resolution, as reflected in the May Pacts with Chile. He also reinforced the national presence in Antarctica, affirming Argentina's sovereign vocation over this strategic territory.

Even after his presidencies, Roca remained an influential figure in national public life. His strategic vision, focused on order, progress and the strengthening of the State, defined a large part of the ideology of the Generation of '80.

He passed away on October 19, 1914, but his legacy remains in force in the institutions of the Republic and in the foundations of our national organization. On March 8, 2024, his figure was incorporated into the Hall of Heroes of the Casa Rosada, in recognition of his role in the construction of modern Argentina.

182 years after his birth, we pay tribute to Julio Argentino Roca, highlighting his determination, his vision of the country and his commitment to a strong, sovereign nation projected to the world.
