Every June 30th is commemorated a new anniversary of the creation of Prefectura Naval Argentina, the national maritime authority that for 215 years has been watching over the safety of our waters and coasts, consolidating itself as one of the oldest, most prestigious and committed institutions in the country.
The date pays homage to Martin Jacobo Thompson, appointed on June 30th, 1810 as the first Port Captain of the Río de la Plata by decree of Mariano Moreno, Secretary of Government and War of the "Primera Junta". With this foundational act, the General Captaincy of Ports was created, the cornerstone of what we know today as Prefectura Naval Argentina.
Over time, this force has gone through different stages of institutionalization: in 1882 it adopted the name of Prefectura Marítima, and since 1969 it bears its current name, which accurately reflects its character and mission.
Under the Ministry of Security of the Nation, the Prefecture is in charge of policing the safety of navigation, controlling public order in national waters and ports, protecting the aquatic environment, and acting as an authority in judicial, immigration, sanitary, fishing and customs matters.
In addition, it performs key functions as an enforcement body for international conventions on maritime safety, protection of the marine environment and vessel control. In its role as Flag State and Port Authority, it is responsible for the registration of vessels and the control of their operating conditions.
Its members also carry out missions against drug trafficking and illegal fishing, conduct search and rescue operations, and carry out public safety tasks in different parts of the territory.
The Prefectura Naval Argentina not only guarantees the safety of waterways, but is also a pillar in the defense of national sovereignty and the care of natural resources.
Today, 215 years after its creation, we salute its members who with courage, professionalism, commitment and vocation of service guard the waters and coasts of our homeland.
