Every May 8, the Argentine people celebrate with deep devotion the Day of Our Lady of Luján, patroness of Argentina, symbol of faith, hope and unity for millions of people throughout the country.

The Virgin of Luján has been venerated since the 17th century, when a small image of the Immaculate Conception was brought from Brazil to Santiago del Estero. Upon reaching the banks of the Luján River, the oxen pulling the cart mysteriously stopped and there was no way to move them forward, except when the box with the image was removed. The fact was interpreted as a divine sign: the Virgin wanted to stay in those lands. Since then, her figure has been closely linked to the soul of the Argentine people.

As time went by, the devotion grew and gave rise to the Basilica of Our Lady of Luján, one of the main centers of religious pilgrimage in Latin America, located in the province of Buenos Aires, where thousands of faithful come every year to pay homage to the Virgin and offer prayers, thanks and petitions through the intercession of her maternal love.

Our Lady of Luján was officially declared patroness of the Argentine Republic by Pope Pius XI in 1930. Her image has also been recognized as patroness of the national roads, of the Argentine Army, of the Federal Police, of carriers and of numerous sectors that rely on her for their spiritual protection.

On this special day, we pay homage to a figure that crosses generations, territories and creeds, and that represents the believing heart of our people. Her blue and white mantle, which embraces those who visit her, reminds us of the strength of faith and the importance of national unity.
