Every May 2nd, our country commemorates the National Day of the A.R.A. General Belgrano Cruise, in homage to the 323 Argentine crew members who lost their lives after the sinking of the ship during the South Atlantic conflict in 1982.

This date was officially established by Decree 745/98, signed on 23 June 1998, with the aim of keeping alive the memory of those who gave their lives in defence of national sovereignty.

On 2 May 1982, in the context of the Malvinas War, the cruiser A.R.A. General Belgrano was hit and torpedoed outside the exclusion zone by the British submarine HMS Conqueror. As a consequence of the attack, the ship suffered serious damage that caused its sinking, resulting in the death of 323 Argentine citizens who were members of its crew.

The National Day of the A.R.A. General Belgrano is a day to remember and recognise the fallen sailors, and a permanent commitment to peace, sovereignty and the history of our Nation.
