April 29: Animal Day

Every April 29th is celebrated in Argentina the Day of the Animal, a date dedicated to reflect on the care, protection and respect for all animals. This commemoration is held in honor of the death, in 1926, of Ignacio Lucas Albarracín, a lawyer from Córdoba and a pioneer in the fight for animal rights in our country.

Albarracín was secretary of the Argentine Society for the Protection of Animals and one of the promoters of Law No. 2,786, passed in 1891, which penalizes acts of mistreatment and cruelty towards animals. His legacy laid the foundations of protectionist activism in Argentina and continues to be present in every action aimed at promoting animal welfare.

At the regulatory level, Argentina today has Law No. 14,346, in force since 1954, which establishes penalties for those who mistreat or make animals victims of cruel acts, reaffirming the State's commitment to their protection.

Animals are part of our lives: they accompany us, take care of us and teach us, with their unconditional presence, the value of respect and empathy. On this day, we renew our commitment to their welfare and celebrate the emotional bond that unites people with animals, in every corner of the country.
