24 April: Day of Action for Tolerance and Respect between Peoples

Every 24 April, our country pays tribute to the victims of the genocide perpetrated against the Armenian people between 1915 and 1923. This date, established by Law No. 26,199, represents a firm commitment to active remembrance, truth and respect between peoples.

24 April 1915 is remembered as the beginning of this tragedy, when hundreds of Armenian political, religious and intellectual leaders were arrested and executed in the city of Istanbul. From then on, the Ottoman Empire deployed a systematic policy of persecution, forced deportation and extermination against the Armenian population, which left more than a million people murdered and thousands of families displaced.

The recognition of this crime against humanity marked a fundamental step in the history of international law, becoming one of the antecedents to the Genocide Convention, adopted by the UN in 1948. That first systematic act of extermination in the 20th century left an indelible mark on the global conscience.

Argentina, home to one of the largest Armenian communities in the world, has actively accompanied the construction of spaces of memory throughout the country, as an expression of the rejection of intolerance and violence.

This day invites us to renew our commitment to peace, coexistence and respect among peoples, values that are fundamental pillars of our democracy.
