Ambassador Rafael Grossi has been elected by the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as its new Director General. Grossi currently serves as Argentine Ambassador to Austria and is Argentina's Permanent Representative to the IAEA, which is based in Vienna.

He has over 35 years' experience in the field of non-proliferation and disarmament, and previously served as Chief of Staff and Deputy Director General of the agency.

The election of an Argentine to the IAEA's top job recognizes the important role of Latin America and the Caribbean as a nuclear-weapons-free-zone, and its contribution to international peace and security.
